Agenda: In this post i’ll tell you about Google page rank and Alexa ranking, and how they can improve your blog’s popularity.
Before talking about the positive side of High Page rank and Alexa ranking, let me share what Google and Alexa say about their own systems.
PageRank (PR):
The range: no PR – PR 0 – PR 1 – … PR 10 (11 numbers plus “no rank”)
PageRank Explained by Google: “PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at considerably more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; for example, it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves ‘important’ weigh more heavily and help to make other pages ‘important.’ Using these and other factors, Google provides its views on pages’ relative importance. …”
Alexa Rank:
The range: no rank – 10,000,000 – 1,000,000 – 100,000 – 1,000 – 10 – #1
Alexa’s definition: “A listing of all sites on the Web, sorted by traffic…
Alexa computes traffic rankings by analyzing the Web usage of millions of Alexa Toolbar users. The information is sorted, sifted, anonymized, counted, and computed, until, finally, we get the traffic rankings shown in the Alexa service. The process is relatively complex, but if you have a need to know, please read on.”
Does pagerank only matters for getting a high ranking?
No. pagerank is not the only thing that matters, things like keyword density, and the anchor text used to link to the site will also have varying degrees of effect on google.
But somehow pagerank matters because it is one of the factors that determine a page’s ranking in the search results. It isn’t the only factor that Google uses to rank pages, but it is an important one.
Alexa’s objective is to show the actual traffic of a particular website, the number that it shows serves as only a random sample of the actual traffic of that website. This is because only a small percentage of internet users are using Alexa toolbar, where Alexa Traffic Ranking algorithm solely base its computation and ranking. In addition to this, Alexa Toolbar works only with the Internet Explorer browser and on Windows operating systems.
Thus, Alexa Traffic Rank has a considerable percentage of error and doesn’t really reflect the exact and actual traffic of a website. But since the traffic was base on a random sample and assuming that the sampling is close to uniform, it could still be a good bases for giving idea of the amount of traffic and traffic ranking, just always remember that it has some percentage of error.
Google pagerank Vs Alexa traffic rank
Google Pagerank and Alexa Traffic Rank though both attempted to rank the websites. On the other hand, they are entirely different in their objective, (Google rank web pages according to its popularity and importance based on inbound links while Alexa rank the websites according to its traffic, which is randomly sampled). That is why it is more often that they show a different and contradicting statistics, specially, for a relatively small and new websites.
Do whatever you can to improve your blog’s Page rank and Alexa Ranking , and you will notice that how your blog’s revenue increases . So continue to work for money and these numbers will follow in the right direction naturally.

Nice article on improving alexa ranking. I also found that the fastest way to improve Alexa rank is to use www.alexage.com. Their service was great and now my blog is in Alexa’s top 50K.
